To deal with famine in Bengal, the provincial government issued Bengal Rationing Order/1943 and Bengal Civil Supplies Deptt. by establishing After the establishment of Bangladesh, a new ministry emerged as Ministry of Food and Civil Supplies and under it an organization called Directorate General of Food was created. As there are food shortages in various areas of Bangladesh, the Food Directorate has become one of the very important departments of the Government of Bangladesh.


Aims and objectives

Provision of food and essential commodities to emergency consumers (import of food grains, rations);

building up emergency stocks (safety stocks);

Helping achieve self-sufficiency in food grains production (traditional procurement);

Expanding the social safety net (VGD, VGF, Kabikha and TR);

Achieving Price Stability (OMS).

Effective and reliable food procurement, supply and distribution management

Achieving farmer and consumer-friendly food price structure.

Introduction of effective and up-to-date food distribution systems/methods.
